A bush braai in the Kruger National Park ended in tragedy when a Canadian tourist was shot dead after a private guide apparently accidentally discharged a firearm.
The incident took place on Wednesday evening at a picnic spot, which is operated by a private concession, in the vicinity of the Phabeni gate.
According to JP Louw, spokesperson for SANParks, preliminary information indicates that a private guide, attached to the concession operator, apparently accidentally fired a firearm. A 69-year-old tourist was fatally wounded in the process.
“The guest was part of a group of people who were staying outside the game park and entered the game park for a bush barbecue hosted by a private concession. The concession has a valid permit to operate the facility within the park.”
The police were called to the scene and are investigating the incident.
SANParks expressed its condolences to the deceased’s family and friends.
