Expert On AI: How will India, which is lagging behind China-America, win the AI race? World Bank Executive Director Neelkanth Mishra told ‘Hook’ – how can India win the AI race World Bank Executive Director Neelkanth Mishra shared his thought
World Bank Executive Director Neelkanth Mishra has said that India will have to change its strategy to come ahead in the race of AI. Our success will depend more on how the country uses AI on a large scale to solve its problems than on building modern AI models.
World Bank Executive Director Neelkanth Mishra has talked about the ‘hook’ due to which India can move ahead in the AI race.
The ongoing competition in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is currently limited to two countries. America and China. Both the countries are competing in latest AI models and advanced chipsets. India is still lagging behind in this race. Now World Bank Executive Director Neelkanth Mishra has talked about the ‘hook’ due to which India can move ahead in the AI race. For this there will have to be a change in strategy. According to Neelkanth Mishra, India’s success will not depend on how many cutting-edge AI models it creates, but on how it uses AI on a large scale to solve its systemic problems. Speaking to ANI, Mishra explained in detail.
‘Health, education and banking are big opportunities’
According to Neelkanth Mishra, India may lag behind global leaders in artificial intelligence and semiconductor manufacturing. But the country has a huge opportunity to create value by using AI to solve problems in sectors like healthcare services, education and banking.
India is not a big player: Mishra admitted that India is not yet a big player in those technologies which are attracting global investors at present. (Ref.)
The world is talking about Artificial Intelligence, Semiconductors and Large Language Models (LLM) and till now we don’t have anything like that.

Why is India lagging behind?
According to Neelkanth Mishra, one of the reasons for lagging behind in the field of AI is the limited availability of ‘risk capital’ in India compared to countries like America. He said some Indian AI companies struggle to raise even a few hundred million dollars, while global AI companies are raising billions of dollars in funding.
‘There is no competition, there has to be implementation’
Will have to use AI: According to Neelkanth Mishra, the country has a big opportunity for AI implementation. We will do well when we use intelligence, not create it.
Then you will get the correct value: By using AI in health related problems, education, banking etc. its economic value will start emerging.
Where is India in semiconductor? Neelkanth Mishra acknowledged that the country has made good progress in the field of semiconductors. According to him, we are proud of whatever we have achieved in the last 4 years. However, the country is still lagging behind in advanced chip making.
The world reached 1.8 nanometers
According to Neelkanth Mishra, the world has reached 1.8 nanometers in the field of semiconductors. Although we are at 28 and 40 nanometers. We are probably eight-nine generations behind. According to Mishra, Semicon 2.0 mission is about to come, after which 7 to 12 nanometer chips will start being manufactured in the country. The country’s innovation ecosystem has improved, but it still falls short. This ecosystem right now needs to be 100 times bigger.
