Sridhar Vembu has clearly said in its latest social media post that China has increased its stature by giving its large language models to the world. India will also have to revive its same vision. Vembu also remembered the time when technology was shared with poor countries for free.
Example given of India and Switzerland
In his post, Sridhar Vembu wrote – I want to highlight the difference between the ‘Internationalism’ of the period immediately after the Second World War and the Globalism after the breakup of the Soviet Union.
Sridhar Vembu wrote that the ‘Integral Coach Factory’ (ICF) for manufacturing trains in Chennai was set up with the technical assistance and cooperation of Switzerland. Switzerland was not trying to ‘sell more goods’ to India. He was helping newly independent India to stand on its feet.
At that time ‘technology transfer’ was a term which was widely used. Then it meant that knowledge should be shared among ourselves and not kept hidden.
Now intellectual property instead of knowledge
Sridhar Vembu wrote that today knowledge has been taken over by intellectual property. The goal today is to sell goods to people who have nothing to sell in return and thus push them into debt traps. The end of globalism is a direct result of intellectual property being used as a tool to dominate global affairs.
Vembu in favor of China again and again, against western attitude
Sridhar Vembu has written things in favor of China in many of his posts. Recently, he had responded to a post describing China’s GLM-5.2 AI model as ‘Claude Moment’ for the world. Vembu had written that big American companies are working on adopting China’s open-source model GLM-5.2. I have long advocated using Chinese models on our own infrastructure.
Even before that, when the US government had ordered not to give Anthropic’s Fable 5 AI model to other countries, Sridhar Vembu had reacted sharply. He wrote that India should not need such AI models.
