Police in the North West are investigating six criminal cases after three employees of a fiber installation company were allegedly attacked by members of the community in Lethabong.

The incident took place on Friday afternoon, 5 June 2026. Three men, between 31 and 32 years old, were apparently stopped and assaulted by community members. Two of the victims sustained serious injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

According to preliminary information, the victims were also apparently detained by force. A case of kidnapping was consequently filed. The men were also robbed of their belongings during the incident.

The company vehicle, a Suzuki Swift used by the employees, was reportedly set on fire and burnt out in front of the Lethabong Police Station.

The police investigate cases of public violence, assault on the police, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, kidnapping, malicious damage to property and robbery with a weapon other than a firearm.

One suspect (29) was arrested in connection with the incident and is expected to appear in court soon.

The investigation continues and further arrests are not ruled out.

Maj. Gen. Ryno Naidoo, acting provincial police commissioner in North West, condemned all forms of violence, vigilantism and criminal behaviour.

“Community members must deal with their grievances through legal channels and refrain from taking the law into their own hands,” said Naidoo.

Meanwhile, rumors are circulating that the attack may be linked to allegations that the employees were mistaken for suspected child kidnappers. However, this information has not been officially confirmed by the police.

According to these allegations, some residents apparently became suspicious after the employees took photos in the area. Rumors are said to have quickly spread that the men were photographing children and possibly involved in kidnappings.
