Brown Mogotsi, the controversial businessman who is suspected of having organized a fake assassination attempt on himself in Vosloorus, was refused bail in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
So Mogotsi remains behind bars.
Magaboke Mohlatlole, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Johannesburg, says the state opposed bail on several grounds, including allegations that the accused failed to cooperate with investigating officers, evaded law enforcement authorities, provided contradictory and unverifiable residential addresses, and allegedly tried to improperly influence the investigating officer.
The accused remains in custody pending his next court appearance on 12 June for the disclosure of the contents of the dossier and the setting of a trial date.
The state claims that Mogotsi organized a shooting incident with his own vehicle and then made false statements to the police and under oath regarding the circumstances of the incident.

Mogotsi is now facing various charges including illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, firing a firearm in a built-up area, thwarting or obstructing the legal process and perjury.
Mohlatlole says the magistrate’s refusal to grant bail indicates the seriousness of the allegations and the court’s role in ensuring that justice is not undermined. “We remain committed to bringing the case before the court and ensuring that the case is settled in accordance with the law.”
