The Hawks in Mpumalanga, together with several government and private sector partners, have obtained a preservation order over four properties worth R5.86 million that are linked to the convicted poaching syndicate leader, Francis Kipampa.
Kipampa is currently serving 18 years in prison, after pleading guilty to charges of rhino horn trafficking, money laundering and his involvement in a rhino poaching syndicate.
Lt. Col. Magonseni Nkosi, spokesperson for the Hawks, says Kipampa was one of 16 suspects arrested during the extensive investigation. Two of the other suspects were apparently former game wardens and some of their relatives.
“Only Kipampa’s case has been concluded. The other 15 accused are facing various charges and are awaiting trial.”
Nkosi says during the investigation a vehicle with a fake compartment was discovered at Kipampa’s house and six rhino horns were recovered in Kabokweni.
Maj. Gen. Nico Gerber, provincial head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, says this investigation demonstrates the power of financial forensic investigations to expose the activities of corrupt rangers who shared important information with rhino poaching syndicates.
“The project also brought about a great loss for the Falcons in Mpumalanga, as it claimed the life of a dedicated and capable investigative officer who was murdered on his way to work on 17 March 2020,” says Gerber.
