12-year-old Morgan Mentoor had many dreams. The one dream he was particularly sure about was to one day become a minister.

This is how Gaynor Mentoor remembers her son who apparently took his own life, because he was disappointed with his karate results.

A few hours before his lifeless body was found in his room, the grade 6 learner from Outeniqua Primary was still standing next to the karate mat with a gold medal around his neck. However, this performance was not good enough for him. It is understood that he wanted to win gold for all the rounds.

Gaynor writes in a Facebook post that her son served the Lord with dedication and was actively involved in the church.

“I want to encourage every parent to raise their children according to the will of the Lord. From a young age, Morgan was serious about his faith. It sometimes felt like we had two church services one after the other, because on a Sunday when we came home, it was church again and Morgan could sing…,” her message reads.

She also writes that Morgan would very spontaneously quote scriptures from the Bible in the back of the van in the morning and start singing.

The school also expressed its deepest condolences to Morgan’s loved ones.

“We celebrate his life, his smile, his presence and the beautiful memories he leaves behind. Even though our hearts ache, we hold on to the light he brought into the lives of others. Our deepest condolences to his family, friends, classmates and all who loved him. May you receive comfort, peace and strength in this very difficult time. Morgan will always be remembered with love,” the school wrote in a post.

Another entry reads: “Even though Morgan is no longer here, his life will be an example to many – including adults, because of his faith. He was truly a child of God.”
