The appearance of prisoners fighting each other on social media, including appearing live on TikTok, and on other platforms is what drew them to Dalawane.

To strengthen efforts to eliminate the importation of inappropriate material into correctional facilities across the country, prison officials have launched a surprise search operation for inmates.

The National Commissioner of the Department of Corrections Mr. Makgothi Thobakgale led the search program at the Pollsmoor Correctional Centre, in Cape Town, on Saturday night.

In a joint operation involving the DCS Emergency Support Team (EST) and members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), officers recovered illegal items including mobile phones, drugs, and sharp weapons.

The discovery of these items proves that corrupt officials continue to facilitate the smuggling of these items into the institutions.
