A man who was arrested over the weekend on charges of attempted murder, died on Monday morning after a shooting in the detention cells of the Ntuzuma police station in KwaZulu-Natal.

Col. Robert Netshiunda, police spokesperson, says the suspect apparently overpowered and assaulted two police officers in the holding cells.

He also apparently took the keys to the detention cells from one of the officers.

“The police called for help and the suspect apparently grabbed an officer’s firearm and opened fire on them in the holding cell.”

The man then held numerous policemen hostage before a tactical team arrived on the scene and shot the 22-year-old suspect. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Netshiunda says two officers, a man and a woman, sustained serious injuries during the incident.

“The officers who were held as hostages will be temporarily released from active operations so that they can receive the necessary psychological assistance,” says Netshiunda.
