Shocking allegations have surfaced about a businessman who calls himself a police officer, Mr. Brown Mogotsi, when he asked for bail at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Evidence was presented that Mogotsi tried to bribe the investigator of his case while he was in custody after his arrest.
These allegations that shocked many were revealed by Prosecutor Thami Mpekane while reading the affidavit of the investigator.
“After the statement was found and the defendant’s thumbs were rolled, he approached me and wanted to talk as I was about to leave him in custody. He put words about the bail. His words were: ‘Is there anything I can do so that you don’t oppose my bail?
“I was offended by what was said to me, I took it as an attempt to bribe me so that I would not oppose the bail request. I told him never to treat me like that.”
Mogotsi will be remanded in custody for another night after the court adjourned the hearing of his bail application to Thursday so that investigators can confirm his address where he claims to live.
The postponement of this puts pressure on Mogotsi who is facing many criminal charges related to allegations that he lied that someone was trying to kill him.
Mogotsi said the State’s case is weak because it is hearsay and he is innocent.
On the other hand, the prosecutor painted a picture of Mogotsi as a dishonest man who deliberately misled the investigators.
Mogotsi was arrested two weeks ago after he was found with an illegal gun and ammunition.
It is said that while the police were trying to confirm Mogotsi’s address, he gave it out while applying for bail and went as far as Mmabatho, North West, where they were met by people who raised their hands saying that they do not know him, he does not live there.
