The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) received one of the heaviest sentences after the Western Cape High Court in Cape Town sentenced child rapist Leano Vergotine (42) to five life terms and 78 years in prison.
The court also applied the provisions of Section 286A criminal procedure law, exposing the accused as a dangerous criminal. The result of this announcement is that Vergotine was sentenced to an indeterminate period of imprisonment under Section 286B of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The court ordered that he be brought back before it after the end of the period decided by the court.
Handing down the sentence, Acting Judge, Amanda Van Leeve, emphasized that there will never be a time when the parole board would consider releasing the defendant on parole. He will have to return to court for further investigation. This landmark sentence follows the dedicated work of State’s Advocate Rene Uys and Warrant Officer Van Rooi, who went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that the Ceres child abuser was convicted and received a sentence commensurate with his heinous crimes.
Vergotine was convicted of charges including assault with intent to injure, assault, five counts of rape, multiple counts of child pornography (the creation and use of child pornography), and child sexual training.
