Grammy-winning South African singer Tyla is set to make history again as she plays a key role in the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup 2026, representing South African and African music at one of the biggest sporting venues in the world.

The “Water” singer is scheduled to perform at the opening ceremony of the tournament in Mexico City before the opening match between South Africa and Mexico on Thursday, 11 June.

FIFA has also confirmed that Tyla will sing the South African national anthem before the start of the matches, putting her on the map.

For South Africans, the event has a special significance. As Bafana Bafana prepares to start their World Cup campaign, millions of viewers around the world will watch a South African artist lead the national anthem before the first match of the football tournament.
