Nine Transnet employees have been suspended after alleged collusion with suppliers.

Three of these employees’ disciplinary hearings have already started and the process is underway to place the relevant suppliers on a blacklist.

Michelle Phillips, chief executive of the Transnet group, says the development is a critical step in strengthening management, accountability and protecting Transnet’s operational and financial integrity.

“Transnet has taken concrete steps in its ongoing efforts to eliminate corruption and misconduct within the organization. We remain resolute in our commitment to eradicate corruption throughout the organization and will not allow the behavior of a few individuals to derail the pursuit of our strategic goals.”

According to Phillips, other irregularities also came to light after an internal investigation was conducted.

Around 34 audits were undertaken across two Transnet operating divisions for transactions closed in the 2024-25 financial year. It was also found that some suppliers asked Transnet anything between 50% and 1,000% more for various items.

The investigation is ongoing and the cases have been turned over to law enforcement agencies.

“While the consequence management processes continue, Transnet is also finalizing targeted actions and implementing systemic improvements to detect such practices and prevent their recurrence,” says Phillips.
