The day started badly for the police at the Ntuzuma station when a 22-year-old prisoner suddenly turned himself in on Monday morning.
According to Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the suspect was arrested on Saturday for trying to kill a family member at home.
after the inmate allegedly beat the policeman with force and grabbed the gun, leaving a number of policemen trapped inside the building.
According to the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the prisoner overpowered a policeman who was inside the cells at the Ntuzuma police station who was going to take him and charge him with legal charges from the trouble.
“It was reported that the prisoner beat the policeman who was inside the cells with force and took away the keys from the cell, said Prem Balram, spokesperson for RUSA.
The police spokesperson says that other police officers came to check the situation after hearing the noise, the prisoner jumped up and took the policeman’s gun and opened fire on the spot.
No policeman was shot when this happened, until other policemen arrived and overpowered the prisoner.
According to Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics, the suspect was killed during a shootout with the police.
Police spokesperson Robert Nethsuinda said two police officers were slightly injured during the altercation, but were not shot.
He also pointed out that although work is going on normally at the station, the police officers affected by this incident will receive psychological counseling.
