THE GROWTH shown by the Proteas women in the recent series against India made the coach, Mandla Mashimbyi, go to the T20 World Cup in the hope that this year could be the one in which the national team ends the misfortune of escaping the title of this tournament.
Mashymbyi said this yesterday, when he spoke to the media following the announcement of the Proteas women’s squad for the T20 World Cup which starts from June 12 to July 5, in England and Wales.
This national team, which is close to winning the recent ICC (International Cricket Council) T20 tournament, is tied in Pool 1.
The World Cup will begin by facing Australia on June 13 in Manchester, followed by Pakistan, India, the Netherlands and Bangladesh.
There are not many players who were surprised by their inclusion in this team except Shabmin Ismail who was last seen in the 2023 T20 World Cup.
The captain, Laura Wolvaardt who is in good form these days, will continue to lead the team and players including Nonkululeko Mlaba, Ayabonga Khakha and Tumi Sekhukhune have been called up.
“All national teams when they go to the World Cup hope to return home with the title, so there is no difference with us,” said Mashymbyi to the Cricket South Africa (CSA) press team.
“The result we got against India (the world champions) recently, should make us believe that we can bring back the title in England and Wales.”
