MaZulu’s new striker, Moses Shumah, wants to follow in the footsteps of his countrymen who made a name for themselves in the Betway Premiership years ago.
Shumah (23) from Kenya, was introduced by Suthu a few weeks ago as one of the new players who are expected to solve the goal scoring problem that has plagued the team coached by Arthur Zwane. He was seen for the first time wearing the Zulu colors at the KZN Premier’s Cup which wrapped up at the weekend at Princess Magogo Stadium, KwaMashu. Usuthu is the one who brought him together in this competition where six teams from KwaZulu-Natal are competing in the Premier Soccer League. Defeated Milford 2-0 in the final.
For MaZulu, Shumah will compete for the jersey with Thandolwethu Ngwenya from Zimbabwe who arrived last season promising but suffered from injury. Ngwenya ended up scoring six goals. Shumah is being watched a lot since he won the goal award in the Zambian league, iMTN Super League Golden Boot after finishing a season that scored 23 for Power Dynamos.
“Everything is going well since I came to South Africa. I have been following South African football but not that much. But I know about the football here because the league is famous. I am looking to do good for the team, we did better than last season. As a player I am looking to do more than what I did last season. That is what I want even though Mdali has his own plan. I am determined to score goals to help the team. I will not say the number but I will try my best to score them,” said Shumah.
By going to play in South Africa, Shumah joined other Kenyan players who made a name for themselves in different clubs. These players include Musa Otieno who played for Santos in Cape Town and Brian Onyango who played for Maritzburg United, Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch FC.
“There are many famous Kenyan players who have played here. I am happy about that. I saw Mandela (Onyango) succeed here. There are many players who have made a name for themselves here, I will not list them all. I can say that I was watching them, following in their footsteps. I appreciated their hard work here and the history they have left in this league,” said Shumah.
MaZulu’s deputy coach, Siboniso “Nini” Vilakazi, said he expects goals from Shumah.
“If you’re a striker, you have to score goals and create a lot of chances. His job is to make sure you cut them in. It’s obvious that he’s struggling because of the speed of the way we play, but we’ll work with him,” said Vilakazi.
