The wedding, which was supposed to take place at 11h00 on Sunday in Newcastle, was canceled after the groom and his father were arrested for drunk driving. RTI arrested 45 drivers on Saturday night and Sunday morning. Those arrested include:

• The groom and his father

• 1 Teacher

• 1 Security Manager

• 2 teachers

• 2 nurses

• One pharmacist

• An official working in the local municipality

• 1 Student

In another campaign called #NenzaniLaEzweni which was conducted in Mhlanga and Durban North, Operation Shanela led by Mr. Siboniso Duma who is the Minister for Transport and Human Settlement led to the arrest of 167 drivers who were driving without licences.

Mr. Ndabezinhle Sibiya, spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Human Settlements, said that they are collaborating with other government departments to maintain traffic laws.

“We are working with 105 national traffic police, SAPS and the Ministry of Home Affairs to monitor the roads,” said Sibiya.

Sibiya says they are encouraged by the Road Traffic Inspectorate’s efforts to enforce the law, which works with municipal departments throughout the province. During this campaign, the traffic police stopped and searched 16,183 vehicles and arrested 2,582 drivers who were charged with violating different laws.

“There are 150 cars stopped on the road for breaking the law,” concluded Sibiya.
