A defender who has won titles including the Betway Premiership and Orlando Pirates, Thabiso Lebitso, has revealed the truth about what attracted him to Stellenbosch FC where he signed a three-year contract.
Lebitso (34) who played 15 league games for Pirates last season, is one of the new players signed by Stellenbosch who let go of a number of mainstays as the season closed.
Among the players released by the Stellies are Lebitso’s former Pirates team-mates Tshegofatso Mabasa and Olisah Ndah.
The titles won by Lebitso and Pirates include the league which was the first in 14 years, Carling Knockout and MTN8 twice.
Although Lebitso suffered from an injury in the Pirates, he will always be remembered for the shot he hit in the net in the home league game in 2024 when Bucs won against their rivals Kaizer Chiefs by 3-2.
Lebitso mentioned a lot of things that attracted him to the Stellies when he spoke to the team’s media team in Cape Town, but he highlighted his vision of the opportunity to impart knowledge to the young players and also work with Gavin Hunt who is the head coach.
Lebitso and Hunt worked together at Chippa United in previous seasons.
“It is obvious that Stellenbosch will focus on young players in the coming seasons, so I consider myself important as I am an experienced player,” said Lebitso.
“What will make the job easier for me is that I know Hunt that he believes in how a player should behave on and off the field.
“I understand what Hunt wants from a player. So this will make a lot easier for me on the field, for Hunt as a coach and for the young players that I have to apply the knowledge I bring.”
Stellenbosch will not play MTN8 this time since they finished last season in ninth place.
