The school “founded” by the suspended Minister of Police, Mr. Senzo Mchunu, Anton Lembede Maths, Science and Technology in La Mercy, north of Thekwini, has done wonders for other schools in the country by doing well in matric results last year.

This school, which was Mchunu’s idea to be established, placed first in the group of schools ranked as Quintile 5, most of which were previously white schools, in an event held by the Department of Basic Education on Friday, in Johannesburg. We passed with 100% in matric, we also got 100% in Bachelors. We got 447 A’s.

It was the first time the school had a matric class last year, following its establishment in 2021. The first principal of this school, Mr. Dumisani Sibaya, praised the work of the teachers and the dedication of the students for getting 100%.

“Work has been done, the teachers are working hard and we are here because of them. We are also grateful for the dedication of the students for the results we have achieved,” said Sibaya.

He said the students were doing 10 subjects, and he also pointed out that most of them got A’s from 8 to 10 in their subjects.

When Mchunu started the story of establishing this school, he was the Minister of Education in the province. The idea came after visiting abroad where he cut a pattern for a school like this that will focus on Maths to improve this subject as Maths Literacy can be done.

Sibaya said that it was not easy to establish this school as he came from one of the schools in Nanda, and he had to form a team to push the work hard because of the vision that existed for this school.

He also mentioned that a school like this needs to be taken care of because of the existing infrastructure, including accommodation for students and ensuring that they eat nutritious food.

He thanked Mchunu for coming up with the idea of this school with his colleague, Mr. Kwazi Mshengu, who was the Minister of the Department who ensured that the dream of this school is realised.
No longer is Menzi High in Mlaza, which has been passing 100% in matric for years as it led the schools ranked in Quintile 4, nationwide in matric. It has become history that this school always eats races every year at matric.

Commending the work done by the teachers and the provinces in matric last year, the Deputy Minister in the Department, Dr. Reginah Mhaule, said that the students who were doing matric were affected during the Covid epidemic, because they were aiming for the days to come to schools, but they have recorded history for doing well in this grade compared to previous years.
