The Falcons in Bloemfontein are investigating after an explosion in the early hours of Friday morning in the Woolworths store in Prellerplein.

The incident is the second at a Woolworths store within about 24 hours.

The same modus operandi was apparently followed in both cases, with the incidents taking place in the food section of the stores.

According to preliminary information, the store manager of the Bloemfontein branch received a call at 03:00 from a security company who informed him about the explosion in the store.

The explosive device was apparently hidden between food shelves.

Police officers and members of the explosives unit have apparently already combed the shop and investigations are continuing. It is understood that the store is temporarily closed.

It was also unclear whether there was any damage to infrastructure.

Ao. Fikiswa Matoti, spokesperson for the Falcons in the Free State, confirmed when asked that the police had handed the case over to the Falcons for investigation.

However, the Hawks have not yet been able to confirm whether the latest incident is related to the explosion that took place on Thursday morning at a Woolworths store in Menlyn Mall in Pretoria.

Maroela Media sent extensive inquiries to Woolworths. The retail group has acknowledged receipt of the inquiries but has yet to provide any feedback.
