COACH Pitso Mosimane sees no doubt about the level Bafana Bafana has been placed in by Hugo Broos who is out of contract to coach the national team.
Mosimane is one of the coaches who applied to replace Broos who is still looking to be given a job by the South African Football Association (Safa). Broos put Bafana in the last 32 of the World Cup for the first time in the history of South African football. Before that, he returned with a bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in 2023.
Although Safa did not reveal the names of the coaches who applied to fill the position of the Belgian coach, it turns out that he is being sought even overseas. Many believe that this job should be given to Mosimane.
Yesterday, the president of Safa, Danny Jordaan, boycotted journalists when they pressed him with questions about the new Bafana coach. It wasn’t hot yet when he told himself that he was waiting for the board to come out with the names of the coaches that should be chosen from them.
Jordaan was one of the guests at Mosimane’s event to launch a book on teaching and coaching from the grassroots level, theThe Youth Football Coaching Manual in Gauteng, yesterday.
“I don’t know how his (Broos) contract stands but what I know is that Safa has spoken to us about the strategy to move forward, what we want. The other thing is how we will put Bafana at a better level. They always say it is important to leave the jersey in a better place. We can still improve. I left Sundowns with the Champions League trophy, they won the second one. So the whole level can be reached, it can be improved,” said Mosimane.
“It’s not the first time we’ve booked a place in the World Cup. Carlos Quieroz did it, it’s not the first time we did well in the Afcon, Clive Barker won it. We can talk about going to the knockout stages of the World Cup, yes we can celebrate. But we’ve done that in the quarterfinals and semi-finals (Afcon). So that level is high but we’ve reached it. We can’t know if it’s too high.”
Mosimane, who does not have a team to coach at the moment, said he is ready to return to the bench.
