For children who spend their days in hospital beds, excitement doesn’t come flying by every day. That is why the arrival of a surprise helicopter from Checkers Sixty60 at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town was a special highlight during this hospital’s 70th birthday celebrations this week.
On board the helicopter was radio and television personality Carl Wastie, along with several Sixty60 executives, who moved through the hospital to hand out Krispy Kreme donuts and gift bags full of goodies – including Padkos fruit snacks and Flyers Puffed Corn – to the young patients.
The surprise visit sparked smiles everywhere and led to happy moments between the children, their families and the health care teams who care for them on a daily basis.

Chantel Cooper, chief executive officer of the Children’s Hospital Trust, says for healthcare workers and the patients’ families, time at the bedside often means being away from others who also depend on them at home.
“Having access to essentials through Checkers Sixty60 has become more than just a convenience – it’s a practical solution that relieves pressure when it matters most. So inviting them to be part of our 70th celebration feels like a natural extension of that support, bringing moments of joy to those who endure and give so much every day,” says Cooper.

In recognition of the long hours and sustained care required by their roles, Sixty60 also donated coffee machines, microwave ovens and toasters for the nurses to the hospital staff.
Dr. Anita Parbhoo, chief executive officer of the hospital, says there is great appreciation for partners like Checkers.
“Checkers play an important role in creating meaningful moments for our patients and employees during this special milestone celebration.”
