Owe City will ‘fight’ to stay on the bench in Caf

Durban City’s COACH, Pitso Dladla, is open about his intentions to conduct Caf A License courses if the opportunity arises as the team will host it in the Caf Confederation Cup competition next season.

Dladla, who is the current coach at City, is expected to be clear soon about his future in this team as the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season wraps up this weekend.

City will face off against MaZulu FC in the Betway Premiership match for Durban’s home team at Chatsworth Stadium, Durban, today at 3pm.

Dladla, who was given the reins in February, won the Nedbank Cup title for City, and he is in a position to help them finish in the Top 8 in his first season promoted to the Premiership.

Citizens, who are in eighth place on the log with 29 points, need one in today’s game to secure a place in the MTN8 next season.

“Actually, I had the opportunity to do Caf A Licence courses in Blomfontein, before the start of this season, but I had to sit down with the chairman of the club.

“We finally agreed that we should stop because at that time the team was busy preparing for the start of the season following their promotion to the Premiership after winning the Motsepe Championship,” said Dladla.

“That is why I have been saying that whenever the opportunity arises, I will go and do these courses. But on the other hand I am controlled by the team management as it should happen, if the opportunity arises again I will have to sit down and consult with the team management. Another thing that should be understood is that these courses are not the same as other courses that you just apply to do in an educational institution or university.

Waiting for the Caf to have courses sometimes takes years, it was probably in 2017 that the Caf A Licence courses existed in the South, and it took a few more years for them to be available again.”

Dladla told the media that he is not in a hurry to take up the position of coaching the team on a full-time basis as he is still determined to improve his coaching experience.

According to Caf rules, Dladla will not be allowed to sit on the bench in Caf Confederation Cup matches as he has a Caf B License training qualification instead of Caf A or Pro License.

If he ends up not continuing his studies, the City management will be forced to hire a coach with the right qualifications, and Dladla will return to being a deputy.

When asked about the match between the home side and Suthu, he said: “We know that a point for us will be enough to secure our place in the Top 8, but what we are determined to do is enter the field and fight for three points.” However, facing MaZulu in a home game is always not easy, so we are expecting a difficult game but we are determined to fight to win it.”
