SOUTH AFRICAN RUNNERS took part in the third leg of the Diamond League track and field series in Rabat, Morocco, at the weekend.

The country was represented by five runners namely Sinesipho Dambile in 200m, Zakithi Nene in 400m, Marione Fourie in 100m, Tshepo Tshite in 1 500m, and Prudence Sekgodiso in 800m.

Dambile was the one who scored the best, taking the third place in the distance of 200m with a time of 20.03 seconds.

This runner finished third in the Diamond League, he just recovered from an injury that denied him the opportunity to run in the World Relay Championships held in Gaborone, Botswana, in May.

Nene placed fourth in a time of 44.41, Fourie crossed the line in a time of 12.62 in the women’s 100m, slightly missing her South African record of 12.49.

In the men’s 1 500m, Tshite placed fifth in 3:31.53, he also lost a bit to the South African record of 3:31.35, followed by Sekgodiso who placed fifth in the women’s race in 1:57.41.

“This is a world-class competition where we see our runners participating in competition with other high-level runners from other countries, which is beneficial from a financial point of view,” said John Mathane, acting vice president of Athletics South Africa (ASA).

“We want to see them succeed. The Diamond League is the theater to give South African athletes the opportunity to show off their skills at the world level.

We congratulate Dambile, his coaches and all those who supported him for his success.

We also encourage all runners to be willing and work hard to achieve success,” continued Mathale.

The fourth leg of the Diamond League 2026, will be held in Rome, Italy, on Thursday.
