THE COACH of Lamontville Golden Arrows, Manqoba Mngqithi, sees his forward Junior Dion as a challenger in the race for the award for scoring the most goals in the Betway Premiership, the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot.

Dion is the leading scorer in the Premiership with 12 in 19 games this season.

He is followed by Mamelodi Sundowns’ Iqraam Rayners with 10 points and Sekhukhune United’s Bradley Grobler with eight points.

In the middle of the week, the Arrows came out with a point in a 1-1 draw with Stellenbosch FC in Mlaza.

With this, the Bes’thende Boys rose to eighth place on the log. On Saturday at 3.30 pm they will face Sekhukhune United, at King Zwelithini Stadium, Mlaza.

“It would be nice to see Dion continue to lead the way with goals but we also continue to improve in our attack as a team. It is also interesting that Ndlovu and Khumalo are among the best players in the PSL (Premiership) in scoring goals. We are not only looking at whether Dion is the leading scorer but we are also looking at how many goals our players have scored. But the truth is that he (Dion) has a tough challenge because they won the goal scoring award, from players like Iqraam Rayners.

“I pray that he continues his form, that he doesn’t get injured and doesn’t get cards because when he’s in form, he does well, he helps the team. But I’m happy that he’s still leading the league in goals,” said Mngqithi.

Mngqithi is confident that his team will enter the Top 8, although he understands that Siwelele can still push them if they win against Orbit College on Sunday.

“Siwelele still has a chance to move us from where we are if they win their next game because they are one game behind, but what is important for us is to continue to hold on and we will not be out of the Top 8,” said Mngqithi.
