A 45-year-old man was arrested in Edenvale on Sunday morning after a violent incident during which an e-taxi driver was apparently kidnapped and threatened with a firearm.
According to the police, the incident took place around 07:30 when the e-taxi driver dropped off a female passenger at a residence in Edenvale.
“The suspect immediately accused the driver of being involved in a romantic relationship with his girlfriend, which led to a confrontation between the two men,” Capt. Tintswalo Sibeko, police spokesperson, said.
According to Sibeko, the situation quickly escalated when the suspect apparently forced the driver to get into his vehicle and prevented him from leaving the scene.
“The suspect also pulled out a firearm and fired a shot in the direction of the driver.”
However, the driver later escaped unharmed and drove straight to a nearby police station to report the matter.
“The police acted quickly and arrested the man shortly after the incident. The suspect now faces charges of kidnapping, the illegal discharge of a firearm as well as obstruction of justice.”
The suspect is expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
