FORMER goalkeeper of Kaizer Chiefs, Itumeleng Khune, has expressed concern about the practice of teams in the Betway Premiership to raise money if Amakhosi want to sell players.

The Chiefs have only signed three players as the window for player registration has opened before the start of the season. But he is the only one who gave him money and he is not from Mzansi.

Amakhosi have sacked defender Thabo Moloisane who refused to renew his contract with Stellenbosch FC. He got him in the same way as the goalkeeper, Renaldo Leaner, who is out of contract at Sekhukhune United.

Earlier this week, the Naturena team signed Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko from Tanzania who was playing in the middle for Azam FC.

It turns out that the Chiefs are looking for a Stellies player, Langelihle Phili. It is said this Western Cape team wants a sum of R16 million for this player. In the past weeks, Amakhosi were looking for Richards Bay player, Thulani “Sasko” Gumede but ended up compromising after the team demanded R8 million. It is said that the Chiefs only want to release R4 million.

“In fact, Chiefs need to enter the market and sign strong players as they will be playing in the Caf Confederation Cup next season,” said Khune, speaking to the media recently.

“So it needs to strengthen the squad. However, as we all know, it is not easy for Kaizer Chiefs to sign the top quality players they need. Unfortunately, if the Chiefs want a player, the money they (Chiefs) want is increased, which is wrong.

I think that in South African football we need to review the issue of the amount of money used to buy players because some teams are able to sign players but others are not. So we need to review that clause, apply it to all 16 teams (in the Premiership) equally.”

It has become history that Amakhosi finally got the winger, Asanele Velebayi, who joined the team at the beginning of the last season of 2025/2026 from Cape Town Spurs who wanted big money for him after his contract expired.

Amakhosi will be led by a new coach, Fernando Da Cruz, next season, and will open the 2026/2027 Betway Premiership season by facing the new team, Kruger United on August 1, at Mbombela Stadium, Nelspruit.
