A fire was caused by the parent of a student who was hit by a teacher’s car and broke down in the school premises on Monday morning.

Mr. Mandla Khuzwayo says that his 16-year-old daughter, who is studying Grade 7, at Avoca Primary, in Avoca, Durban, was injured by a car hit by a female teacher and she was rushed to the clinic immediately.

Khuzwayo said that what disgusts him the most is that the female teacher has never shown any remorse for this.

”He doesn’t care that this person hurt a small child. It scares me the way he acts as if nothing happened at all,” he says.

He said what they found was that the teacher backed away from the student who was behind the car.

”What is puzzling us is why the teacher does not contact us to ask what the student needs as he is just injured. Everything must be done by us as if this child was hurt by us,” he explained.

He stated that it is strange that a student could be injured on Monday but until yesterday the teacher did not contact the family.

According to him, this clearly shows what kind of person a teacher is.

”It is clear now that we are dealing with someone who does not care about the health of our children. The sad thing is that we take our children to school saying they are safe and have their parents if they sit with the teacher. It is clear now that we are actually just fooling ourselves,” he said.

Explaining how the student was injured, he said that he broke his leg and now walks with crutches. He praised the principal and said that he was the one who showed humanity by sympathizing with them.

”He is the principal who has indicated that the student will be allowed to take a break and not come to school until he fully recovers,” he said. Khuzwayo says this has helped them as he reveals that the student is in pain.

He said what worries them is that he seems to be very scared since the incident happened. He revealed that the younger sister of the injured student is now afraid to go to school and says she is afraid that the teacher will hit her with a car.

”You can see how big a problem this unscrupulous teacher has gotten us into,” he explained.

The spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, Mr. Muzi Mahlambi, said they will contact the inspector and the principal to find out more about the issue.

He said that the injury to the student is worrying, but they do not believe that the teacher could have done this on purpose.

“There is no teacher who can wake up in the morning and come to school crying that there is only one student who is going to hurt him with a car,” he said.

In a situation like this, he said they have encouraged the teacher to contact the family and help with other expenses if he is unable to do so.

KwaZulu Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza confirmed the incident. He said Greenwood Park police are investigating a case of negligence after a teacher injured a student with a car at school.
