Gasoline consumers will have to spend carefully and work wisely with their money until fuel prices stabilize, warns the trade union Uasa.

Abigail Moyo, spokeswoman for Uasa, says the latest fuel price adjustment brings mixed news for consumers: Petrol is getting more expensive, while diesel, paraffin and LP gas are getting cheaper.

Maroela Media earlier reported that petrol rose by R1.43 per liter on Wednesday, while the price of diesel fell significantly. Diesel 0.05% drops by R3.25 per liter and diesel 0.005% by R2.62 per liter. Paraffin drops by R5.96 per liter and LP gas by 17c per kilogram.

Moyo says the fuel price outlook brings mixed feelings to consumers.

Although there was an over-recovery across all fuel categories, the national treasury is now also restoring part of the relief that was previously granted on the fuel levy.

According to Uasa, R1.50 per liter is added to petrol prices, while R1.96 per liter is added to diesel. In diesel’s case, however, the over-recovery still leads to a drop at the pumps.

“While the fuel price outlook is disappointing for petrol drivers, we welcome the good news on diesel prices as we hope it is the start of a return to normal conditions.”

She says industries and businesses that rely on diesel, including the logistics and agricultural sector, will benefit directly from the drop in diesel prices.

Uasa also welcomes the reduction in paraffin prices, as many households rely on paraffin for daily use and heating.

According to the union, petrol prices have risen by around R8 per liter over the past four months.

“We hope fuel prices will continue to improve, and we strongly encourage petrol consumers to remain cautious and use their money wisely until the situation stabilises.”
