A 28-year-old man was caught at the Cape Town International Airport with 150 live poisonous scorpions in his possession.

The arrest was the result of an intelligence-driven operation between Kuilsrivier’s livestock theft and endangered species unit and Cape Nature Conservation.

According to Sgt. Wesley Twigg, police spokesperson, responded on Friday to information about a person at the airport with scorpions in his possession.

“A description of the suspect was obtained and he was apprehended. His luggage was searched and 150 live scorpions were found among his clothes.”

The suspect was arrested for illegal possession of wild animals.

According to Twigg, the scorpions were taken to a safe haven.

The suspect will appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
