Sinovuyo Dyokwe, the DA’s candidate for the by-election in ward 104 in Dunoon in the Western Cape, was shot dead on Saturday as she returned home from the registration room during voter registration weekend.

According to Nicholas Gotsell, the DA’s constituency head for Atlantis, Blaauwberg, Table View and Dunoon, shots were fired at Dyokwe when she was on her way home after the day’s work at the registration room.

“This murder is incomprehensible to me and leaves me speechless. She joined the DA because she believed in their values and principles. A woman in politics who stuck firmly to her convictions and worked in her community to make it a better place. We will miss your bubbly personality,” says Gotsell’s Facebook entry.

JP Smith, mayoral committee member for community safety in Cape Town, says Dyokwe was known for her broad smile and bubbly personality and was instrumental in growing the DA voter base in Dunoon.

She has also established herself as a reliable and effective community activist.

“The DA expresses our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Dyokwe. Gotsell is already in discussion with the police to establish the facts. Counseling sessions have already been made available to her family, friends and colleagues,” says Smith.

He says the party will monitor the situation closely and will fight to ensure that Dyokwe’s loved ones receive the justice they deserve.

Geordin Hill-Lewis, federal leader of the DA and mayor of Cape Town, also expressed his deepest condolences to Dyokwe’s loved ones and colleagues.

“Sino was an energetic activist and helped the DA achieve its best ever result in terms of growth in a recent by-election, where she was our candidate. Residents in the community loved Sino and she could always be found walking the streets of Dunoon to improve services,” reads her Facebook entry.
