George Kusche is the new Comrades king! (Photo: Pieter Cloete/Maroela Media)

“Are you going to run to win?” was one of Maroela Media’s questions to George Kusche in the run-up to the Comrades marathon.

The 27-year-old former pupil of the Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool replied that he was not necessarily going to choose a specific position; he is just curious to see how well he will do.

And guys, he did a great job!

Kusche is the new Comrades champion, after he won the 85.777 km of the up-race from Durban to Pietermaritzburg in an unofficial time of 5:15:56.

In the process, he ran to shreds Leonid Shvetsov’s record time of 5:24:39.

With a pair of yellow sneakers on his feet and sunglasses on his shaven (streamlined!) head, the Nedbank athlete flew up and down.

Other athletes lose steam in the darts; Kusche then turned on the taps with opinion and turned on reputed opponents such as Mbuti Mollo and Piet Wiersma.

Kusche’s secret weapon? He loves bumps, having run up to 1,000km a month in preparation for the iconic ultra.

Talent and hard work are always a formidable combination.

Yes, his legs were very sore at the finish line, but the crown (and the winning check and a nice incentive bonus) is his. Not a bad performance at all for a seasoned athlete in barely his second Comrades marathon…

All hail to George; the Comrades King!

Leading men (unofficial times):

  1. George Kusche: 5:15:56
  2. Piet Wiersma: 5:19:36
  3. Mbuti Mollo: 5:21:31
