OpenAI, Google and Anthropic: Google, Anthropic and OpenAI have come together to stop Chinese companies who are making cheap AI products by copying American AI models. Companies have started working together to beat Chinese competitors in the AI race and get ahead at the global level.

US AI Companies : Open AI, Anthropic and Google have joined hands to take the lead in the AI race globally. The three companies have started working together to stop Chinese companies from making their AI products by copying the cutting-edge American Artificial Intelligence models. According to reports, these companies are sharing information through Frontier Model Forum. It is a non-profit organization, which was established by these three technology companies in collaboration with Microsoft in 2023. Its purpose is to detect theft like adversarial distillation that violates the terms of service, i.e. stealing data from a big company by questioning its expensive AI model and then making one’s own fake product from the same data.

Fake products being made in China

This decision taken by the three tech companies shows the concern that some users, especially in China, are making fake versions of their products, which are cheaper than their products and can defeat them in the market. It can also pose a threat to national security. US officials estimate that unauthorized distillation causes Silicon Valley laboratories to lose billions of dollars in profits annually, ET reports.

OpenAI confirmed

OpenAI has confirmed that it is part of an effort to share information on adversarial distillation through the Frontier Model Forum. Google, Anthropic and Frontier Model Forum refused to say anything on this. Let us tell you that distillation is a technique in which an old AI model is used to train a new model, which mimics the capabilities of the earlier system. Also often made at a lower cost than the original model.

Many Chinese models available for free

Most models made by Chinese labs are open weight. This means that parts of the underlying AI system are publicly available for users to download and run on their platforms for free. Therefore it is cheaper to use them. This poses a challenge for US AI companies that have kept their models proprietary. The hope is that customers will pay for access to their products and help recoup the hundreds of billions of dollars spent on data centers and other infrastructure.
