KAIZER Chiefs has finally fulfilled the promise by introducing its women’s football team, Kaizer Chiefs Ladies, after a while proposing to have a women’s team in one of the women’s football leagues in South Africa.
The milestone of the official launch of the Chiefs women’s team took place on Tuesday afternoon, in Daveyton, Gauteng.
This team from Soweto will play in the Safa Gauteng Sasol League in the 2026 season, which is expected to start in July, following the purchase of the Springs Home Sweepers certificate by Joseph “Skheshe” Mkhonza, who was once the coach of the national team, Banyana Banyana.
Mkhonza has a long history with Chiefs since he was a star of this team in the 1970s to 80s.
Last year, in September, Amakhosi announced their partnership with Home Sweepers as the team they will work with.
This Chiefs team, which will be coached by Unathi Mbena assisted by Justice Khunou as deputy, includes players including Mamello Makhabane who was a midfielder for Banyana, Zanele Kunyamane and Katlego Mohale who played in the junior squads of the national teams.
It also ties with players who have experience playing in the Hollywoodbets Super League, which is the biggest league in South Africa where Chiefs Ladies will be fighting for promotion next season.
“This is a proud moment for Kaizer Chiefs. As a club we understand the responsibility of carrying South African football, so this is a step towards our dedication to growing the game (women’s) football in the right way.
Women’s football is an important part of the future of football, and we want to be a part of its journey,” said the chairman and founder of Chiefs, Kaizer Motaung, in the team’s statement.
Amakhosi didn’t just present the team yesterday, as they also presented the company that will be their sponsor, Bruma Logistics, which is a trucking company.
Jessica Motaung, who is the marketing and commercial director, said this is an important step in finding the original way in women’s football.
“Women’s football is growing rapidly around the world and South Africa is part of that growth.
“We want female players to see that they have a place in the Kaizer Chiefs team,” said Jessica.
“Thank you to Safa for continuing to support women’s football, and the support we received as a team from Brima Logistics.
“Sponsors are very much needed to develop and grow women’s football in our country,” continued Jessica who is the vice president of the Caf African Clubs Association (ACA).
Apart from following Caf’s instructions to have a women’s team, Amakhosi increased the number of women’s teams under the Betway Premiership teams, namely Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and TS Galaxy Queens who play in the Hollywoodbets Super League.
