PUSHING for success is the weapon that helped fashion designer, Mlungisi Ndlovu, win the Young Designer Award fashion competition at Hollywoodbets Durban July held at Hollywoodbets Greyviille Racecourse, Durban, on Saturday.

With his victory, Ndlovu from Greytown (Mdlovana), KwaZulu-Natal, who is studying fashion at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), walked away with a R70 000 scholarship to support him in his studies.

Up until now, the journey of this competition started with more than 140 fashion designers who were selected, it was reduced to 25, and it continued to the last 10 of which the top three came out.

In second place was Dalisu Vumase from Sikhawini, from iGoda Incubator, who received a scholarship of R50 000, while in third place was Thato Selekane from Johannesburg, also studying at DUT, who received a scholarship of R30 000.

Speaking after the victory, Ndlovu said that this title he received proves that hard work breeds success and encourages him to continue working hard on his work from now on.

“I worked very hard to prepare for this competition, so much so that there were times when I slept late at night, sometimes until the early hours of the morning, working hard to do everything that was required during the competition,” he said.

The spokesperson for the Hollywood Foundation, Ms. Vuyisile Ngobese, said that they were happy to see the students working in the fashion industry working hard from the selection stage of the competition until the end.

“We were very impressed by their goals and the different ways they worked which made it easy to choose the winner, which we like because it shows that the standard is high and that the competitors understand what is required.

“All that encourages us to continue with this competition because it is one of the ways we try to support young people who love fashion with the aim of helping them become independent and able to create job opportunities in their areas,” said Ms. Ngobese.
