The Gauteng Provincial Government has suspended Inspector Samuel Mashaba who is the head of traffic police in Gauteng pending the outcome of the disciplinary process.

The prime minister’s office said the decision follows Mashaba’s testimony before the Madlanga Commission, where he admitted to conduct that may be a violation of the civil servants’ code of conduct, the department’s policy and the laws governing civil servants.

According to the provincial government, there are allegations related to the reckless use of powers given to him as a law officer, the reckless use of tools of the department of commerce and government services, and accepting compensation from a member of the public in situations that raise concerns about conflicts of interest and behavior.

The Gauteng provincial government said it takes the allegations seriously and remains committed to maintaining a high level of integrity, accountability and professionalism in all its institutions.
