POLICE fighting corruption in KwaZulu-Natal arrested a police officer, Warrant Officer KwaMsane, on Friday, for helping suspects to escape from custody.

On February 27, 2024, three suspects escaped from police custody at the KwaMsane station after cutting the metal and the roof of the house.

A month later, Mr. Sibusiso Gumede, one of the suspects who escaped from custody, was arrested again during a roadblock in Vryheid.

Police investigation revealed that Gumede and two of his colleagues escaped with the help arranged by a Detective Warrant Officer who provided them with a metal saw, allegedly in exchange for R5000.

The court issues a warrant for the police officer’s arrest. He will appear at the KwaMsane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, June 2, 2026 on charges of helping suspects escape from custody and robbing suspects, breaking the law and corruption.
