The loophole for friendly and group hiring in local municipalities will soon be CLOSED when the new law comes into effect.

The MEC for Cooperative Governance and Indigenous Affairs who is also the leader of the IFP, Mr. Velenkosini Hlabisa, said that the new law affecting local governments aims to ensure that people who deserve the job are employed in the positions.

He said this while speaking at the IFP event to celebrate Independence Day in Johannesburg, yesterday.

Hlabisa said that friendly hiring is what makes municipalities fail to deliver needs to the people.

“People should not be hired based on friendship and politics. In order for municipalities to work well, people who know their job should be hired. Hiring people who don’t know their job makes municipalities fail to meet the needs. If you want to meet the needs of the community, you should hire someone who knows their job. We will make sure that all municipal officials who will be hired know their job,” he said.

Hlabisa said that the mayors also want people who know the job. He said they also want there to be no frequent change of mayors in the municipalities in this country.

Many mayors who entered in 2021 are leaving office.

Some were removed from their groups and others were deprived of the mayor’s chains after being turned over to small groups that do not control the municipalities as many municipalities are jointly managed.

Hlabisa said that the change of mayors causes instability in municipalities.

“A municipality that changes mayors often does not have stability. As we go to the elections, we must have a municipality that has stability so that the delivery of needs is not interrupted.”

Speaking on Independence Day, Hlabisa said the people of this country have not received the freedom they were promised more than 30 years ago.

Hlabisa said that freedom is a dream for the masses of people in this country who are suffering from hunger and rampant crime.

He also said that there should be a fight against crime and violence against women and children.

Hlabisa said they are concerned about the issue of illegal immigrants. He said that having a large number of immigrants in the country means that the immigrants end up putting pressure on the government services in the country.

“The issue of immigrants is serious. A disaster could happen. The many protests we are seeing show that a disaster could happen. Here in the coalition government, we stand by the word that people who are in this country illegally should not return to their countries. This thing is happening all over the world,” said Hlabisa.
