AFTER a few weeks Durban City made history by becoming the first KwaZulu-Natal team to win the Nedbank Cup, this province is on the verge of making another history by having three teams finish the Betway Premiership season in the Top 8 for the first time since the Premier Soccer League (PSL) was established.

Although it was the first KwaZulu-Natal team, Manning Rangers, to win the first league title in the first PSL season of 1996/97, but this province has never had three teams finish the season in the Top 8.

It has happened many times that KZN has had two teams finish the season in the Top 8, as happened in the previous season of 2024/25, AmaZulu and Richards Bay were booking a place in the MTN8.

MaZulu FC’s second place finish in the Premiership log in the 2020/21 season followed by securing a place in the Caf Champions League, Royal AM’s third place finish in the 2021/22 Caf Confederation Cup, has restored hope for KZN teams who have always been known to avoid relegation.

Taking a step of believing in the young players of the teams in this province including AmaZulu, Richards Bay FC, and Lamontville Golden Arrows, has been prominent in the past few seasons, and was praised by Arrows coach, Manqoba Mngqithi on several occasions.

So hitting this time of the season where there are two games left and there are still three KZN teams in the Top 8, strengthens the hopes that after 29 seasons PSL was established, history may be made by the teams in this province.

The Zulus are in fourth place on the log with 44 points, fighting to keep this position until the end of the season in the two remaining games.

Usuthu will play against Kaizer Chiefs today at 3 pm in the Premiership at Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban, and close with Durban City at home next Saturday, May 23, at Chatsworth Stadium.

Citizens, who are in seventh place on the log with 38 points, will play Orlando Pirates today at 3 pm at Orlando Amstel Arena, Soweto, and close with Suthu on May 23.

The Bes’thende boys, who are in eighth place with 37 points, still have a chance to finish in the Top 8 as they will play against Chippa United today at 3 pm at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Gqeberha.

They will wrap up the season with a home game against TS Galaxy on May 23, at King Zwelithini Stadium, Mlaza.
