IMOTO: TOYOTA LEGEND 55
Every time I travel south of Durban, my eyes open wide when I’m in Prospecton.
After all, this is where Toyota South Africa Motors (Tsam) is based. It is also where South Africa’s favorite car, the Hilux, is manufactured. I mean on purpose that it is a car and not a van because Hilux is the only one that sells more than all other cars in the country, not just vans.
My eyes widen because I’m hoping that I might come across a new Hilux that has been on the market for months.
At the weekend luck fell on my side when I saw him in a truck on the N3 on my way back from a funeral in Mtshezi. However, I saw it a little since the truck was moving and I didn’t have time, so I could have explained it better.
I would advise you to never stop reading this siteIt’s the weekend because definitely in June when it is presented, we will be there and come back with a full report about it.
While he was waiting, Toyota did what believers usually do, which is to wait for the Master with a song.
The song this time is Legend 55, which is Toyota’s way of saying goodbye to the Hilux, which started selling in the country in 2016.
From 2004, Toyota built a Hilux to celebrate its 35th anniversary and called it the Legend 35. They never looked back because they kept making other Legends that are 40, 45, 50 as it was only 55.
They have made sure that you don’t get confused at all that it is him by carving his name in many places. You can find it in the front doors, in the styling bar which is different from other Hiluxes and in the back of the cabin.
Before I even got in, right outside, to make it stand out from the others, they made it shine on the grille, mirrors and door handles.
The rims are 18 inches and the hull has rubber for protection when you load things that might scratch.
I like the fact that you can lock the door and the goods are protected from the inside as there is a roller shutter but it does not work electrically.
Once you get inside you will never forget what you are going through because Legend 55 has been recorded in many places.
Inside is also where it shows that the competitors are newer than it because it still beats with a long gear and handbrake, another USB charging port and touchscreen infotainment system which is a “mdi” type.
On the touchscreen, you can connect a mobile phone via Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and it shows the outside so you don’t crash.
The engine is a 2.8 liter GD-6 turbodiesel with a 6 speed automatic gearbox.
It has a power of 150kW and a torque of 500Nm.
What I have noticed is that they seem to have improved the way it is comfortable on the road even if it is not up to the level of a Ford Ranger that drives alone.
Although the competitors have more powerful engines, but I have heard that it also stands up when you step on it.
Since it’s a 4×4, I was able to travel freely saying that I will never get stuck anywhere because there are all the services such as diff lock and 4 low range.
On the diesel it consumed 9.9 liters per 100km and on a tank you can expect to go just over 600km.
