AI is not replacing search engines
This trend is being seen especially among young users. According to this report, 67% of Gen G and 65% of Millennials use AI assistants daily for at least one new search in their day. But, among older people this number is only 30%. However, the results show that AI has not replaced search engines.
How is AI being used?
Only 27% of AI users consider AI their primary source of online search, while 36% use it first after getting information from a search engine or other source, and 26% use it along with other sources of information.
lack of trust right now
- Still, answers from AI are often not the last thing in the search process.
- In general, about one-third (33%) of users click on links from AI assistants, while 19% compare that information with other websites before taking action.
- At the same time, 28% of people say that they usually stop searching after getting answers from AI. This shows that AI has an increasing ability to directly meet people’s information needs.
- Three-quarters (75%) of AI users in India say they use AI assistants more today than a year ago, and 68% expect their use to increase over the next 12 months.
49% people are using it to get direct answers
- This research points to a search ecosystem where consumers constantly move between AI assistants, search engines, websites, social media platforms and marketplaces before making decisions.
- For Indian users, the biggest feature of AI is its speed and convenience.
- Nearly half, 49%, use AI assistants to get direct answers to questions, while 44% rely on them to verify information from other sources.
- At the same time, 43% of people use AI to create content summaries and the same number of people use it to compare products, services or options before making a decision.
This is how trust will increase
- Although 69% of online searchers in India say they trust information provided by AI assistants, their trust is slightly lower than that of search engines and maps.
- People said that the most important things to increase trust are that the answers are based on authoritative sources and multiple references, and it is clearly explained how the answers are generated from AI.
- Edward Hutasoit, General Manager, YouGov India and Indonesia, said, “The search box is one of the most familiar interfaces on the internet. AI assistants are changing the way we search. They provide direct answers rather than just directing people to where answers can be found.
