EFF leader Julius Malema was sentenced to five years in prison.
Malema was convicted of firing a gun.
The decision was made by East London Magistrates’ Court.
Magistrate Twanet Oliver also sentenced Malema to two years in prison for violating the laws governing the handling of firearms.
He will serve these sentences at the same time.
Malema was also fined R20 000 or six months in prison for the other three charges he denied.
The court decided that Malema should be stripped of his right to carry a gun.
Malema filed an application to challenge the court’s decision.
Malema fired a gun during an event to celebrate the ten years since the establishment of the EFF.
