IMOTO: VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTI

It has occurred to me that I should just write the name of the Volkswagen Golf GTI, put the pictures and the price and close the story.

After all, the Golf GTI is a car that does not need to be introduced or explained because it has a long history around the world and in South Africa.

In fact, some even don’t pronounce Golf at all but just say it’s GTI.

Whether it’s in the townships or in the member, there are probably few people who don’t know.

If he doesn’t go to buy them for his needs, he comes flashing the green lights of the police or the white lights of the private security companies.

I remember when the police unit called Scorpions drove Golf 4 GTIs. Just like there are Hawks, they also go with Golf GTIs.

One of the reasons the police and others like it is how fast it is on the road.

They’ll be happy to hear that, now dubbed the Golf 8.5 GTI, the power has been increased.

When the Golf 8 GTI arrived in South Africa in 2021, the 2.0 turbo petrol engine had a power of 180kW and a torque of 370Nm. From 0 to 100km/h was 6.4 seconds.

In the 8.5 GTI the power of this same engine has been increased to 195kW. This makes it reach 100km/h in 5.9 seconds and the speed ends at 250km/h.

I’m driving it in Johannesburg this week and I used to laugh to myself when I had to pass other cars because I used to see a space and then I stepped on it and it quickly gave me the power I needed.

The 7 speed DSG gearbox shifts well but I was also holding on to the pedal shifters behind the steering wheel.

I have noticed that even if you have chosen to change the gears yourself, but when you pedal until it looks at the red lines in the revs, it changes itself.

As with the Golf 8 GTI, the famous “vrrr pha” sound when shifting is no longer as loud as before as foreign laws do not require the sound.

Another thing I have noticed is that no matter what drive mode you are in, it doesn’t shake or feel too sensitive on the road, making it a good everyday car.

In petrol they say it consumes 7.2 liters per 100km in a 50 liter tank.

At the end of last year, when the first stock of the Golf 8.5 GTI arrived, VW in this country revealed that what they are buying is the only thing they will be able to choose because it comes with everything installed.

That is still going on. There is no additional fee, choose what you want.

At the front it comes with high quality LED headlights. They are joined by a line that runs below the famous red grille. The VW logo is now illuminated in the front.

The 19” treaded wheels are called Queenstown and are designed exclusively for the GTI.

At the back, the two arches are shiny and there are LED lights.

In the hood, a popular feature in VW cars, the panoramic sunroof also comes at no extra cost like the old one.

The interior has leather seats. The former can be heated or cooled.

Another thing that can heat you up is the steering wheel, which has been restored with old hard buttons since the customers who complained about the shine were easily affected.

It also has a digital instrument cluster that is bright and can be changed to show what you want.

Also prominent is the large 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It comes with directions, you can connect your mobile phone with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, you can play the radio, it shows you the outside when you park and so on.

The safety and driver aids they have installed include adaptive cruise control, it tells you when you’re about to crash, it helps you park and more.

Price:

Volkswagen Golf GTI- R908 000

It comes with a five-year or 90,000km service plan, a three-year or 120,000km warranty and a 12-year service plan.
