Police from the Anti-Corruption Unit in KwaZulu-Natal arrested two police sergeants for fraud in Nanda on Friday, 20 February 2026.

Two Sergeants, one at the Nanda Police Station and the other at the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court, were reported to have been extorting money from those who were running illegal pubs and those who were selling illegal cigarettes in Amaoti area.

It had been a few months since the two suspects went to the victims, posing as policemen and showing their original police cards and firearms before they demanded money from the deceased to avoid arresting them.

On the 14th of January 2026, the community of Amaoti gathered and arrested the two suspects, disarmed them and took them to the Amaoti police station. The police who were working at the police station directed members of the public to the Nanda police station to file charges.

The same policemen are reported to have left the station with the policemen caught in the back of a police van.

When the community arrived at the police station in Nanda, they were confused when they found out that two policemen were not brought to the station and no one from the Community Service Center has any information about the alleged fraud and arrest of the policemen. Members of the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit took up the investigation which led to the arrest of two sergeants on Friday.

The suspects will appear at the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 23 February 2026 on four charges of fraud, and other charges may be added as there are more victims and two police officers are being charged. The judicial investigation is at a high level against the police officers who allegedly failed to file a case and helped their colleagues to escape from the Amaoti police station.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said that in order for the police to be able to fight crime properly, they must first clean themselves up.

“There are few people who tarnish the reputation of the police, so we must deal with them internally and eliminate them completely. We cannot have policemen who are involved in criminals, and those who are found to be involved in any kind of crime must be arrested and face internal disciplinary action. We thank the community of Amaoti for respecting the law by not taking the law into their hands, but we apologize. We have disappointed you and let the accused go, but the wrath of the law will take its place and justice will be served,” said Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi.
