The police launched a search after a mass shooting on Tuesday evening claimed the lives of 12 people and left many others injured.

According to the police, officers responded to a shooting in an informal settlement in Cleveland.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that eight adult men and three adult women were pronounced dead at the scene,” says Capt. Tintswalo Sibeko, Gauteng police spokesperson. Another man later died in hospital.

“At least nine other people were taken to various hospitals,” says Sibeko.

Police say more than ten suspects in a white Toyota Quantum were dropped off near a gas station in Cleveland before the shooting.

“The group apparently entered the settlement and fired at residents in several places, before fleeing again in the same vehicle,” says Sibeko.
