A large part of the salary of a police officer suspected of corruption, Sergeant Fannie Nkosi, ends up paying for her luxurious house. It turns out that Nkosi owns a house worth R1.5 million, which he pays R7 500 every month.

Nkosi earns R16 500 per month. He gave this information to the court when he asked for bail at the Magistrate’s Court in Pretoria, yesterday. Nkosi did not reveal if there was any other money he received aside from his salary.

He is accused of being close to and receiving money from businessmen facing charges, Mr. Vusumuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala, and Mr. Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe.

Nkosi has been arrested for violating the terms of the storage of firearms, possession of illegal ammunition, possession of case files that are still being closed, possession of explosives and obstructing the operation of the law.

He denied all the charges against him, and accused the State of tying him to the buffalo’s hooves.

“I deny all the charges against me. All the guns I found were in the safe. It is nonsense that other guns were found in the bed.”

In the affidavit, Nkosi said the bullets he received were bullets given to him at work.

“There is no law that says I have to return all the ammunition that my employer gave me when I was suspended from work. When I was suspended from work, I was not told to return the ammunition. I was told to return the gun and the card to enter the work. It was difficult for me to return the ammunition because when I was suspended from work, I was told that I am not allowed to go to work.”

He said that the dockets that were found should have been with him because he is part of the team that investigates the robbery of vehicles transporting money.

He denied that he was found with explosives. Mbuso said that he wanted Nkosi to be granted bail and said that he might run away from the crime if he is released. Mbuso said Nkosi is dangerous because he works with gangs. The bail hearing was adjourned to Monday.

Meanwhile, the hearing of the bail application for the man accused of killing a witness who testified in secret at the commission investigating the allegations made by the KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has been postponed to next week.

Mr. Matipandile Sotheni, appeared briefly at the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court yesterday, where he is facing the charge of murdering Mr. Marius Van Der Merwe. His bail application hearing has been postponed to April 24.
