BharatFS Ai System: Maharashtra is the first state in the country to adopt BharatFS Artificial Intelligence System. With its help, the state got accurate estimates of rainfall at the local level. Due to this system, Nashik got more than 24 hours time to make preparations after the warning of excessive rain.

With its help, weather can be predicted very quickly and the forecast is updated frequently.
Heavy rains have caused damage in many areas of Maharashtra including Mumbai. It could have been higher had BharatFS not been an AI system. Till now we have read in the news that big cities of Maharashtra could not bear the rain, but the state government has reduced the impact of this weather disaster by using technology to a great extent. The full name of the BharatFS system that is being said to be used is ‘Bharat Forecast System’ which is the country’s next generation high-resolution weather forecasting platform.

According to NDTV report, the BharatFS AI system is run with the help of the country’s high-performance supercomputers – ‘Ark’ (Arka – at IITM Pune) and ‘Arunika’ (Arunika – at NCMRWF, Noida). According to the report, with its help the weather can be predicted very quickly and the forecast is updated frequently.

How did BharatFS AI system help Maharashtra?

According to the information, this AI system gave accurate and local level rain related warnings to the disaster management system of Maharashtra in advance. The same system said in its warning that there is a possibility of excessive rain like cloud burst in Nashik district.

  • This warning was received in time, due to which the administration there got 24 hours time to prepare.
  • It is said that even before the rains started, the local administration had implemented the necessary protocols.

According to the report, the BharatFS AI system provides a great example of how AI-based weather intelligence, advanced numerical weather prediction and high-performance supercomputing can work together to help prepare for crises before they occur.

Special features of BharatFS

  • This system has been developed by IITM Pune. It takes the help of AI assisted decision-support systems and supercomputers to gather weather information.
  • According to the report, old forecasting models used to estimate seasonal activities in an area of 12 kilometers.
  • This system can closely understand the weather events occurring in an area of 6 kilometers.
  • It can predict events occurring in a very small area such as cloud burst, flash flood, landslide etc. (ref.)

Came in May, showed effect in July

Maharashtra is the first state in the country to adopt BharatFS system. It was included in the state’s disaster management system in the month of May itself. This system proved its usefulness in July. According to the report, whatever seasonal information is received from this AI system is sent to the officials present on the ground in real time. Weather forecasts are updated every three hours.

  • BharatFS is special because predicting events like cloud bursts is one of the most difficult tasks in the world. The reason for this is that such incidents happen in small areas.
  • Traditional systems warn of heavy rain in the entire district, but cannot tell the exact area where the heaviest rain will occur. BharatFS AI system has completed this work.
