The Klawer police are investigating a case of attempted murder after a shooting incident on Thursday evening around 19:00 on the N7 near Paddavlei.

Sgt. Wesley Twigg, spokesperson for the police, says the traffic officer stopped a vehicle, but the motorist did not want to cooperate.

“The suspect produced a firearm and shot the traffic officer before he sped away from the scene. A member of the public helped the officer and drove him to a police station where paramedics treated him.”

Maroela Media learns that he underwent an operation and is in a stable condition.

No one has yet been arrested in connection with the incident. Authorities are following up on all leads.

Leoné Venter, DA councilor in the West Coast district municipality, says this is not just a news event.

“It’s a reminder that the people who keep our roads safe put their own safety on the line every day. While many of us spend the festive weekend with family and loved ones, there are officials who sacrifice their time to ensure we get to our destinations safely.”

Venter believes road safety starts with each of us.

“Obey the rules, drive responsibly, and show respect to traffic officers and all law enforcement. They are not there to punish, they are there to save lives. Let’s stand together against violence and indifference. Our officials deserve better. They deserve safety. They deserve respect.”
