Two suspects, respectively 19 and 56 years old, were arrested after a shooting incident on a farm near Senekal in the Free State during which a dog was shot dead and property damaged.
“The police caught the suspects on a smallholding in Bethlehem and seized four firearms,” says AO. Mmako Mophiring, spokesperson for the police.
According to information, a 65-year-old farmer was in his workshop on Tuesday when he saw a white pick-up truck drive past his farm. About 15 minutes later, he heard gunshots and spotted the same vehicle again before it sped away from the scene.
“The farmer chased the vehicle and apparently recognized the driver as his business partner from Bethlehem. During the chase, the suspect allegedly crashed into the door of the farmer’s bakkie three times. The farmer was not injured.”
On his return to the farm, he discovered that his dog had been shot dead, that tractor tires had been shot and that hay had been set on fire.
According to Mophiring, the incident apparently stems from a previous dispute. The suspect allegedly threatened the complainant via WhatsApp earlier after a dispute over sheep that had been removed in terms of a court order.
Detectives located and arrested the suspects. The firearms will be sent for ballistic analysis.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Senekal Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of attempted murder, malicious damage to property and animal cruelty.
