The tight-knit conservation community of Hoedspruit was plunged into mourning after the death of Gary Freeman, one of the owners of the private Klaserie nature reserve.

Freeman (65) died on Thursday evening after an elephant attacked and trampled him while he was on a tour in the reserve.

According to Brig. Hlulani Mashaba, police spokesperson in Limpopo, said the incident took place around 18:00 while Freeman was escorting a group of tourists through the bushveld.

“Allegedly, the deceased was on a tour of the reserve with tourists. The deceased got out of the vehicle at one stage and continued on foot,” says Mashaba.

“An elephant rushed at him moments later. He tried to scare the animal off by firing shots with the revolver he had with him, but was finally attacked by the elephant,” says Mashaba.

Bystanders immediately tried to help. After the incident, the manager and the visitors did everything possible to bring Freeman to safety.

“The driver took him to a safe place together with other tourists and called paramedics. On their arrival, he was unfortunately pronounced dead. The police investigation continues,” says Mashaba.

Big gap in Klaserie community

Freeman was not only an owner of the reserve, but also an integral part of the local ecosystem and community. He is remembered as a man who dedicated his life to the landscape.

In a tribute, the Klaserie private nature reserve expressed their condolences to his wife, Hanneke, and his loved ones.

“It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Freeman, a valued and respected member of the Klaserie community. Gary was a true gentleman and an indispensable part of Klaserie.

“His presence, kindness and contribution to this landscape will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”

The reserve also asked that the family be given a chance to mourn.

“Our sincere condolences go out to Hanneke, his family, friends and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. We ask that their privacy be respected as they come to terms with this loss.”

The reserve emphasized that Freeman’s legacy will live on in the Bosveld.

“Gary will always remain part of the Klaserie. In moments like this, the power of the Klaserie lies in its community; in supporting each other with care, compassion and understanding.”
